In a letter dated September 23, 2003, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stated the Alpine Fire Safe Council (AFSC) is exempt from Federal Income Tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The AFSC is treated as a public charity , rather than as a private foundation.
Publication 557 provides detailed information about the rights and responsibilities of an exempt organization. The AFSC is able to accept donations from public and private entities and is very grateful for all donations as they are used to continue the ongoing effort of establishing and maintaining a fire safe community.
Additionally, the AFSC is established with the State of California Department of Justice Registry of Charitable Trusts. This status is updated every year as part of the process of filing taxes for the AFSC.
