By definition, Fire safe councils are grassroots community-based organizations in California that share the objective of making communities less vulnerable to catastrophic wildfire. Fire safe councils accomplish this objective through education programs and projects such as shaded fuel breaks or firebreaks to protect area residents against an oncoming wildfire and to provide firefighters with a place to fight the oncoming fire. The first fire safe councils started in the early 1990s, and there are now over 100 around the state.
The Alpine Fire Safe Council was established on April 9, 2003 in Markleeville, CA by a small group of local residents who believed in keeping their community safe. The specific purpose of the AFSC at that time was to reduce the risk to life and property in Alpine County from catastrophic wildfires. This remains the primary purpose today.
Over the years, the membership of the AFSC has changed and evolved with the times, but the fabric, goals and mission have remained constant. Various community members and residents have joined the AFSC either as a member, or a supporter, or as a donor. The AFSC has applied for and been awarded various grants over the years. Projects were identified and completed. Programs were established and have thrived. Relationships were developed and nourished between the AFSC, community members, residents, and partner agencies.
As the AFSC nears it's 20th anniversary, we look back on the many activities and projects completed, and we look forward to even more projects, and more education for the community, and more relationships, and more of every other thing that makes the AFSC what it is. We definitely could not do it alone. We exist because of you, and we will thrive and grow in the years to come because of you as well. Please join us for the journey.
