The Alpine Fire Safe Council depends solely on donations, grants and fundraisers. As a nonprofit entity, the AFSC applies 100% of all funds received to projects in the community to enhance fire safety, continue education efforts, develop literature and materials for distribution, and to continue the efforts of the AFSC. We truly appreciate every dollar awarded to the AFSC.
Law was passed in 1906 to transfer 10 percent of the forest receipts (through grazing fees and some timber sales) to the states to support public roads and schools. Two years later, Congress ratified the Act of May 23, 1908 (1908 Act). The 1908 Act expanded the payments to the states from 10% to 25% of gross receipts In 2008, Congress then amended the original 1908 Act (1908 As Amended).
In 2000, Congress passed the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act of 2000 (SRS)
In years when the Secure Rural Schools Act is reauthorized by Congress, Title I and Title III payments are made from the Forest Service to states. States then distribute the payment to all eligible counties.
• Title I - Secure payments schools and roads
• Title II - Special projects on federal land
• Title III - County funds for specific purposes
The AFSC receives a portion of the Title III funds each year. Those funds are used for Education and Outreach, and Defensible Space projects.
Currently, the largest funding source for the AFSC comes through grants awarded by CALfire. There are various grants available through CALfire each year, and the AFSC applies for them as appropriate for Alpine County.
Current CALfire grants awarded to the AFSC allow us to focus on Wildfire Prevention included hazardous fuels reduction, wildfire prevention planning and wildfire prevention education.
The largest fundraiser for the AFSC each year comes from the opportunity to participate as a vendor for the annual Death Ride Tour of the California Alps. To visit the Death Ride website for the Death Ride, please click on the quick link under Resources at the top of this page and visit the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce website.
World class cyclists come from near and far to Alpine County for one weekend in July for the opportunity to cycle over the county's tallest mountain passes all in one day. The AFSC supports not only exploring the beautiful landscape of Alpine County, but the sense of community that comes from participating in such an iconic event as the Death Ride.
During the 3 days of the annual event, the AFSC members volunteer their time to sell beer at the "home base" or registration area of the event. The proceeds from selling beer benefits the AFSC as this is the primary source of income for the AFSC's general fund.
Please join us at the Death Ride in July, interact with the AFSC, buy some beer and/or commemorative cups and support the AFSC and Alpine County!
